Mapleton Early Childhood Center
Boulder, Colorado 2009
Early in 2008, a study was initiated to assess the feasibility of repurposing the now closed (2003) Mapleton Elementary School to an early childhood center. The project was overseen by the Mapleton ECC Coalition and the study prepared by Alan Ford Architects in association with Clifton Jones. The team concluded that with alterations and some significant systems upgrades, the facility was well suited for a center for early childhood care and learning.

In 2009 the Mapleton Coalition embarked on the second phase of the project to develop the concepts outlined in the feasibility study and to further assess the costs, code implications and site related issues associated with the possible conversion. Alan Ford Architects and a design team consisting of a structural engineer, landscape architect and mechanical/electrical plumbing engineers were hired to develop early schematic plans. A traffic engineer was added to the team to conduct traffic and parking analysis to inform site development concerns.

Sustainability
As outlined in the feasibility report, implementation of sustainable strategies is a high priority with a target of LEED Gold. The lighting, mechanical and plumbing systems are all called to be fully upgraded to meet these needs.
